A private well gives your family, farm, or ranch direct access to groundwater. It also means the property owner is responsible for protecting that supply. Groundwater contamination prevention is not one single repair or product. It is a set of practical choices around well construction, property maintenance, chemical storage, wastewater, and regular water testing.
For homeowners and agricultural operators across Brookhaven, Bogue Chitto, Wesson, and surrounding Mississippi communities, the goal is simple: keep surface contaminants from finding a path into the well and the aquifer below it. A clean-looking well site does not always mean the water is safe, which is why prevention and testing need to work together.
Start With a Properly Constructed, Sealed Well
A well is designed to reach a water-bearing formation below ground. The space around the well casing, however, must be sealed correctly so rainwater, runoff, insects, and contaminants cannot travel downward along the outside of the pipe.
A properly installed well includes durable casing, an appropriate sanitary well cap, and a grout seal around the casing. The top of the casing should extend above the surrounding ground, not sit low where runoff can collect. The ground near the well should slope away from the casing so rainfall drains away rather than pooling at the wellhead.
Do not assume an older well has the same protection as a newly installed one. Age, settling soil, storm damage, vehicle contact, and worn components can create openings that are hard to spot. If the cap is cracked, loose, missing a screened vent, or accessible to rodents and insects, it should be addressed promptly.
Keep the Wellhead Accessible and Protected
The wellhead should remain visible and accessible for inspection and service. Avoid covering it with soil, mulch, decorative structures, or heavy materials. Keep vehicles, tractors, and equipment away from the casing and pressure tank components. A damaged casing can become a direct entry point for contaminated water.
It also helps to maintain a clear area around the well. Thick brush, stored materials, and overgrown vegetation make it harder to notice leaks, standing water, or physical damage. A clean well site makes routine inspection faster and service work safer.
Manage Runoff Before It Reaches the Well
In Mississippi, heavy rain can move water quickly across a property. That water may carry pet waste, fertilizer, oil, sediment, bacteria, and other contaminants. Runoff is especially concerning when a well sits in a low area or near driveways, barns, livestock areas, or drainage paths.
Make sure roof downspouts, driveway drainage, and yard drains direct water away from the well. Do not create a landscape berm that traps water near the casing. If standing water remains around the well after rainfall, the grading should be evaluated.

If floodwater reaches the wellhead or covers the casing, avoid assuming the water is safe. Have the system inspected, disinfected when appropriate, and tested before returning it to regular household or livestock use.
Protect Groundwater From Septic and Wastewater Problems
A private well and a septic system can work reliably on the same property when both are properly located and maintained. Problems arise when septic components fail, drain fields are overloaded, or wastewater is discharged where it does not belong.
Keep septic tanks pumped on the schedule recommended for the household and system size. Watch for warning signs such as slow drains throughout the home, sewage odors, wet ground near the drain field, or backups. These are not issues to postpone. Never route gray water, washing machine discharge, or other household wastewater toward a ditch, low spot, or area near the well. Local and state requirements for separation distances matter because soil type, slope, groundwater depth, and system design all affect how contaminants move underground.
Store Fuel, Chemicals, and Waste With Care
Many groundwater problems begin above ground with a small spill, leaking container, or poorly chosen storage location. Gasoline, diesel, oil, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, paints, and fertilizers should be stored in sound, clearly labeled containers under cover and away from the well.
For farms and ranches, inspect fuel tanks, transfer areas, chemical mixing locations, and equipment maintenance spots. A slow leak beneath a parked tractor or a fuel tank can add up over time. Use spill containment where it makes sense, clean spills immediately, and dispose of used oil, batteries, chemicals, and containers through approved methods.

For livestock operations, manure management matters just as much. Keep feeding areas, waste storage, and animal confinement zones well away from the well whenever possible. The right setback distance depends on the layout of the property, soil conditions, animal numbers, and local requirements.
Inspect and Maintain the Well System
A yearly visual inspection is a practical habit for every private well owner. Look at the casing, cap, wiring, piping, pressure tank area, and ground around the well. Check for cracks, corrosion, loose connections, unusual noises, wet spots, and changes in water pressure.
Water changes can also point to a problem. Cloudiness, sediment, a new odor, staining, unpleasant taste, or a sudden change in pressure should not be ignored. A home test strip can be useful for basic screening, but certified laboratory testing provides more dependable answers when health-related contaminants are a concern. Do Not Leave Old Wells Open or Forgotten
Unused wells are a common weak point on older rural properties. Covering an abandoned well with plywood, a bucket, or a concrete block is not a permanent solution.
Have unused wells evaluated and properly plugged according to applicable requirements. Before buying land, ask about old homesites, former barns, and previous water sources. A forgotten well may be hidden by vegetation or buried under years of property changes.
